Our Programs
Focused on Developing Skills in Young People
Our dedication to enabling and empowering young people shines through our five core programs. The goal of these programs is to encourage our youth to become better leaders, learners, creators and to lead positive and successful lives.
Our Five Core Areas of Programming
Character & Leadership Development
Programs in this area strive to encourage youth to develop a positive self-image, establish meaningful relationships during interactions with Club and community. We also encourage youth in this program to engage in the democratic process and become culturally aware and respectful toward their own and others’ cultural identities.
Education & Career Development
We work with young people to explore their abilities and apply these skills to real-world situations. We help them understand basic educational disciplines and familiarize them with technology to show how it can help them personally and professionally.
Health & Life Skills
We care about health, which is why this program focuses on educating members on living positive, successful lives as self-sufficient adults who can set personal goals and foster their own well-being.
The Arts
Programs in The Arts enable young people to hone their creativity and develop their world view through knowledge and appreciation of visual and performing arts, crafts and creative writing.
Sports, Fitness, & Recreation
Athletic competition and fitness programs can provide many benefits for our youth. The Sports, Fitness and Recreation programs we offer will develop fitness abilities, social skills, positive use of leisure time, as well as encourage stress management and appreciation of the environment.
Examples of Our Programming
Boys & Girls Clubs of the Cedar Valley use the five core areas of programming to develop activities for Club Members that are safe, fun and life-changing! Here, young people can learn and grow in a safe space that welcomes youth from all communities. Here are a few examples of programs you may see at our locations:
- Power Hour – A homework assistance and academic support resource.
- Computers – Club Members participate in internet safety classes, music editing, Photoshop and more. Technology is always evolving and now our children can evolve with it too!
- Performing Arts – Our Club Members can engage in performing arts activities by taking lessons in modern dance, ballet, trumpet, cello, violin, drums or piano.
- Athletics – Club Members enjoy participating in our basketball and flag football leagues as well as a variety of fitness and sports clinics that are led by professional trainers, the Waterloo Black Hawks and a variety of UNI Athletic Teams.
- Volunteer Opportunities – Our Club Members volunteer in the community constantly. Whether they are helping maintain community gardens, reading to senior groups, cleaning up parks or feeding the homeless, it is clear they are very passionate about helping others.
- STEM – We offer fun clubs to encourage youth to build skills in STEM-related fields, including our weather club, chess club, science club, cooking club, summer camping and more.
